A lesson that one learns quickly is, in order to make a success of a website, whether it is representing a large and long established commercial concern, or promoting the rock band you and your friends put together a few months ago, is that it takes a fair amount of time, and a well rounded, all-inclusive plan. Part of any good Internet marketing plan incudes a banner exchange program.
Banner exchanges offer a unique opportunity to spread your message all over the web. For those who are not familiar with them, they work in a reciprocal fashion. The company arranging the exchange, i.e.:LinkBuddies will provide a webmaster with a bit of code to place in their page(s). There is some form of tracking or coding within this text that tracks the number of page views and click throughs. The example sited above, starts the new website with a specific number of banner placements as a sign-up bonus, then extends reciprocal placements on a ratio basis, based on the number of page views at your site. Quite simply, every four of someone else's seen on your site, puts three of yours on other participating sites. They review your "hits" and adjust your ratio accordingly. There is definitely an incentive offered to display their banners as frequently as possible throughout your participating site.
THE PROS AND CONS
Banner exchange programs make it possible for a small business, or even individuals, to get their message in front of a vast audience. There seems to be some consensus, and studies supporting the claim, that the Internet is about as effective as direct mail, offering a response rate of 1% or less. The plus side is, that more and more people are signing up and logging on daily. One percent of 2,000,000 is still quite a few!
Some banner programs do not allow for the customization of banner content, so you might find your competitor's banners on your website! This, fortunately is becoming a thing of the past as automation is making customization of content easier and easier.
Some webmasters, perhaps fueled by greed, or in eagerness to get into as many banner programs as possible, may develop a site that is graphically "busy", or seems to contain more banners than content. With older computers and slower modems, these pages can be a cumbersome download. The solution is, of course, to build pages and particpate in banner exchange programs with some care and caution. Try approaching the task of banner placement with the idea of using it as a graphic enhancement to your site, perhaps using them to break up lengthy blocks of text (like someone we know!). Set a policy for your pages, like: One Banner at top center. A uniform appearance throughout your site can help it to look professionally managed and aesthetically pleasing. While participation in more than one banner exchange program may be appealing or even advisable, wait until your site contains enough pages so that you can effectively spread around the banners without over-loading any single page.
