to assign text and background colors. So what's going on and why favor one over the other?
Browsers are set to recognize to some actual color names, and their index seems to increase with every new release. Many people, particularly those with a more artistic background as opposed to a technical background, are more comfortable using color names as they have used them all their lives in conversation. Problems can arise when a visitor to your site is using a Browser Program that does not recognize a color name you may have used. This is where the RGB Color Values come in.

Quite simply, the RGB value is a series of six digits, the first two affecting the amount of red, the second two affecting the amount of green, the last two affecting the amount of blue, hence the name "RGB". This is similar in concept to the principals of "Color Seperations" used in printing, and RGB values are much more widely recognized by various browsers and versions than color names. The drawback is, of course, learning all those @#*$&% colors and RGB Values! Fear not, for listed below you will find a reference guide to recognized color names and corresponding RGB values. Your monitor must be set to display a minimum of 256 colors in order to see colors correctly. Note that some older versions of Netscape Navigator will not display all of the listed colors correctly even when your monitor is set at 65,535 colors. This is a limitation of Netscape Navigator's implementation of color support in earlier releases. These colors are included so that you will know which colors work and which do not. HINT: We recommend that you always assign a background color value in your tag as we have found that not all browsers on all systems automatically assign a default value of white.
